How To Cancel Vehicle Registration Online in Wyoming in 2026

Wyoming does not offer an online system for canceling vehicle registration. Vehicle owners must manage registration matters through their local county treasurer's office, as the state operates a county-based system for all motor vehicle registration transactions. The Wyoming Department of Transportation oversees the statewide vehicle registration system, but actual registration processing occurs at the county level.

When you sell, dispose of, or transfer ownership of your vehicle, state law requires immediate removal of license plates from the vehicle. Wyoming allows registration credit transfer to replacement vehicles owned by the same person within sixty days; however, it does not provide direct refunds of unused registration fees.

When Registration Cancellation May Be Needed

Several situations require attention to your Wyoming vehicle registration status and license plate removal:

  • Completing a private party sale of your vehicle
  • Trading your vehicle at a dealership
  • Gifting your vehicle to another individual or organization
  • Establishing residency in another state
  • Returning a leased vehicle to the lessor
  • Scrapping or recycling your vehicle at a salvage facility
  • Receiving an insurance total loss determination
  • Filing a stolen vehicle report with law enforcement authorities
  • Storing your vehicle without maintaining active registration
  • Settling estate matters involving vehicle transfers
  • Withdrawing a vehicle from operational service permanently
  • Deploying for military service requiring vehicle storage

In-Person Cancellation Through County Treasurers

Wyoming processes all vehicle registration transactions through county treasurer offices in each county seat. Registration expires automatically upon transfer of vehicle ownership, and you must immediately remove license plates from the sold or disposed vehicle.

License Plate Removal Requirements

License plates in Wyoming belong to you as the registered owner, not to the vehicle. If you purchase or acquire another vehicle within sixty days after removing plates from a sold vehicle, you may apply to transfer the registration to the newly acquired vehicle. The county treasurer will calculate fees based on the new registration amount minus a credit for the unused portion of your original registration.

County Treasurer Office Transactions

Contact your local county treasurer's office to manage registration matters after selling or disposing of your vehicle. County treasurers maintain vehicle registration records and process plate transfers.

Required Actions:

  • Remove license plates immediately upon selling or transferring vehicle ownership
  • Retain plates if planning to transfer to another vehicle within sixty days
  • Apply for plate transfer at county treasurer's office with new vehicle documentation
  • Provide proof of ownership for replacement vehicle
  • Pay applicable registration fees minus unused portion credit

Processing Locations:

Visit your county treasurer's office in your county of residence. Each of Wyoming's twenty-three counties operates a treasurer's office that handles vehicle registration. Locate your county treasurer using the county treasurer contact list provided by Wyoming Department of Transportation.

Permanently Registered Trailers

Special provisions apply to permanently registered trailers under Wyoming law. Upon transfer of ownership of a permanently registered trailer, the permanent registration expires, and you must immediately remove the license plate. If you acquire another trailer within sixty days for which the permanent license plate would be proper, you may transfer the plate to the newly acquired trailer without additional registration fees.

Registration Fee Credits

Wyoming Statutes § 31-3-103 establishes that registration fees are not refunded unless paid and collected by mistake. Instead, Wyoming provides a credit system allowing you to apply unused registration value toward a replacement vehicle registered in your name.

Credit Eligibility

The state calculates registration fee credits only when you transfer plates to another vehicle you own within the prescribed timeframe:

Sixty-Day Transfer Window: You have sixty days from the date you remove plates from the sold or disposed vehicle to acquire a replacement vehicle and apply for plate transfer with credit. After sixty days, no credit applies to replacement vehicle registration.

Same-Owner Requirement: Credits apply only when the original plate owner registers the replacement vehicle. You cannot transfer credits to another person or receive cash refunds for unused registration periods.

Proper Vehicle Type: The replacement vehicle must be appropriate for the license plates being transferred. Passenger vehicle plates transfer to passenger vehicles, truck plates to trucks of similar weight classification, and trailer plates to similar trailers.

Calculation Method: County treasurers calculate the credit based on the unused portion of the original registration fee prorated by the remaining months in the registration period. The credit reduces the registration fee for the replacement vehicle.

No Standard Refund Provisions

Wyoming law provides no mechanism for cash refunds of unused registration fees when you sell, dispose of, or permanently remove a vehicle from service without registering a replacement vehicle. The statute explicitly states that fees shall not be refunded except when paid and collected by mistake.

Mistake Refunds: County treasurers may issue refunds only for fees erroneously collected. Contact your county treasurer's office with documentation if you believe fees were collected in error.

Commercial Vehicle Credits: Proportionally registered commercial fleet vehicles withdrawn from service receive prorated credits applied to the fleet owner's proportional registration account for subsequent additions during the same registration year. Credits below five dollars per vehicle are not applied. No credits apply to fees for different registration years, and no cash refunds are issued.
